Geographic what?

In children, life, micah on September 22, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Today Micah had his 4 month check-up with his pediatrician.  Things are going well for us so there weren’t really anything we needed to discuss with her.  However I had noticed a funny spot on his tongue about 3 weeks ago so I thought I would just mention it to her.  Then the other day I noticed that he had the same spot on both sides of his tongue.  It wasn’t causing him any discomfort or pain and he was eating just as well as he always did, so I figured there was no rush to determine what it was.  It did cross my mind that it might be thrush, but since it didn’t bother him and I wasn’t sore I kind of ruled that out.

So we went to our appointment and waited for the doctor.  She came in and I mentioned the spots on his tongue to her.  She got out a tongue depressor and proceeded to examine his mouth.  Her diagnosis, “geographic tongue”! She then proceeded on with her appointment acting like what she just said was as normal as saying “hi” to someone.  Needless to say I (and Josh) were curious.  So when we got home I typed it into Google and seen what Wikipedia had to say.

What in the world?!?

What in the world?!?

Geographic tongue, also known as benign migratory glossitiserythema migrans, or continental tongue, is a condition affecting the tongue. The colloquial names are due to the condition resembling a map.

They say this it is not serious, which is a relief.  They say it runs in families, although I have never know anyone in my family that has had it.  But of course it is not like we sit around at Thanksgiving or Christmas and discuss how are tongues look. The also say it comes and goes, but so Micah’s has only come and has gotten more pronounced.  They say it affects 3% of the population, with 0.06% of those affected being Americans and they also say that girls are 3 times more likely to be affected than boys. They also say that it could be connected to psoriasis, which is a little disheartening as my grandmother suffered from psoriasis and it is not a fun thing.

I don’t have any pictures of Micah’s tongue to show you.  It is hard to get him to do what you tell him, but he is only 4 months old! So I am including this picture with a description of what Micah’s looks like.  For more pictures take a look at this page on Google.

Micah's look like this, except his are not as white as this and he has them on both sides of his tongue.

Micah has one like this on both sides of his tongue and it is not as white.

So along with talk about his head shape, penis care and vaccinations it was a interesting but good visit!

Dedication

In children on September 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Dedication (Lat. dedicatio, from dedicare, to proclaim, to announce), is to immerse oneself with sincerity into a certain subject or properly the setting apart of anything by solemn proclamation. It is thus in Latin the term particularly applied to the consecration of altarstemples and other sacred buildings, and also to the inscription prefixed to a book, etc., and addressed to some particular person.

Today was baby dedication Sunday at our church. We attend First Baptist in Macon and have really enjoyed becoming involved in the church over the past 3 months.  It has been a real change for our family, but I think it was a good one.  So today we dedicated our son, Micah John who just turned 4 months.  In case you are wondering the dedication service is not some magical service that now means my son will go to Heaven upon his death.  Not at all close, that will come when and only when my son accepts Christ as his personal savior through faith in Christ.  When that day and time comes, it will mean even more emotionally and spiritually than today meant to me and my husband.  No today was about Josh and I giving our son to God for His purpose and glory. The above definition states it is to immerse yourself with sincerity or to be set apart.  It is my husband and my desire to raise our son (and daughter) to personally know and love the Lord with all their heart, soul and mind.  We strife to raise them in a godly home and teach them godly values that will direct their lives from the day they are born until the day they die.

So it was with great love that we stood before our church and along with his grandparents, the congregation and other parents we pledged to love our children and lift them up to the Lord and teach them His ways.  This will be our goal as our son grows and develops.  It is a high calling and one that should not be taken lightly.

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

In life on September 12, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Out of sight, out of mind

Meaning: The idea that something is easily forgotten or dismissed as unimportant if it is not in our direct view.

Origin: The use of ‘in mind’ for ‘remembered’ and ‘out of mind’ for ‘forgotten’ date back to the at least the 13th century. The earliest printed citation of a link with memory and the sight of something is in John Heywood’s Woorkes. A dialogue conteynyng prouerbes and epigrammes, 1562, as reprinted by the Spenser Society, 1867:

“Out of sight out of minde.”

This is where I am at right now in my life.  I could post more and I could post specifics but when it all comes right down to it, they are not important.  I know them and sadly the others involved know them as well even though they might not want to admit it. It has been bugging me for a while now and I have debated how to handle it.  Do I send them an e-mail, do I let it go, or what?  It is bothering so i have to get it out, but I am not sure it is worth it all to send the e-mail.  So for now, this blog post will serve as my outlet. And maybe in the future I will feel lead to send that e-mail. Maybe not.

Never Forget

In life, pain on September 11, 2008 at 8:47 am

I am sure we are all aware of what today is. It is September 11, 2008.  A bittersweet day for my family and I am sure for many others for a different reason.

Today is my husbands 34th birthday.  Today 34 years ago he was born in Ionia Michigan. It is a day his mom will always remember.

Today is 9-11.  Today 7 years ago terrorists attacked New York City, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.  It is a day that we will always remember.

Today we celebrate and remember.

Today we mourn and remember.

Park Benches

In life on September 8, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Earlier today I was reading through some on my blog sites that had new posts and I came across this post. As i was reading through her blog, I wa laughing and remembering a time when my husband had a similar conversation with our daughter, who was around 3 or 4 years old at the time.  They both were sitting on the couch at my mother-in-laws house and were watching an Ice Cube movie when a scene came on the screen where they were in the park and something was said to the effect of park b****es.

Daddy: We don’t say words like that honey.”
Daughter: Park benches? Why can’t we say park benches daddy”.
Daddy: Never mind.
Me: (laughing) I think she is too young to understand

Aren’t children great!

And of course there is also the time when they were playing the rhyming game in the car and daddy chose the word ditch as the one to rhyme with.  Needless to say, after a few words back and forth our daughter said b***h.  Oh will he ever learn!?!

Tee-Shirts

In life on September 2, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I was browsing this site the other day, looking for a couple of tee-shirts for myself and a couple of gifts for my niece and nephew who are going back to school.  They have some great tee-shirts that I think that teenagers would really like and actually wear.  I know that from working with teens, they want clothing that is in fashion and hip.  Most of the teens that i have worked with in the past said they didn’t typically wear Christian tee-shirts because they were not fashionable or cool looking.  So I told some of them about Jesus Branded and they liked them.  So if you have a Christian teen that you want to get some cool new clothes for, check them out. It is a great site.

Here is the link to my new favorite! I love the sunflowers.

And because I like my shirts larger, I would order this one too!

So I really hope you will check them out and support them too!
